Environmental Politics and Governance (EPG)

10th Annual Conference

Québec City, Canada, June 18-21, 2024

Call for proposals

We invite paper proposals addressing significant theoretical ideas with rigorous quantitative or qualitative research designs in all domains of environmental politics and governance. The conference aims to showcase outstanding research, offer authors with valuable feedback, and provide a platform for scholars to enhance their networks and shape future research directions.

The organizers are committed to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, embracing methodological eclecticism, and upholding EDI principles.

The conference will encompass plenary sessions featuring research presentations and discussions, as well as poster sessions. It will include 30-35 papers in the plenary format and 15-20 papers in poster sessions. It is not possible to participate remotely.

The conference builds upon the success of previous EPG conferences held in Seattle (2015), Zurich (2016), Bloomington (2017), Stockholm (2018), Santa Barbara (2019), Oslo (2020/2021), Penn State (2022) and Glasgow (2023).

EPG conferences continue to attract a large number of new participants. For reference, 80% of the participants to the 2023 Glasgow conference did not attend the 2022 EPG conference at Penn State.

Costs and logistics

There are no registration fees for presenting authors.

To foster community-building, all participants are expected to stay in the same hotel. We have reserved 50 rooms for three nights in a recently renovated 17th-century monastery. These rooms cost between $189 and $259  CAD per night.

Cost concerns should not discourage potential applications. The organizers will provide limited financial support to presenting authors who do not have access to research funds.

Complimentary vegetarian meals will be provided to all conference attendees.

Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements.

In order to maintain an intimate conference environment, only one non-presenting coauthor may attend the conference. This person may be subject to a registration fee.

We expect full attendance and active engagement from all participants throughout the conference. Please plan to arrive no later than Tuesday, June 18, at 5 pm for the welcoming reception, and depart no earlier than Friday, June 21, at 1 pm.

Optional social activities will be organized before and after the conference. These activities may include a pre-conference activity for EPG first-timer, a walking tour of the city, canoeing along a river, and visiting the Huron-Wendat nation. Participants will be responsible for their participation fees for these activities and are required to make their own arrangements for any additional nights' stay.

Submission Process

All submissions, including those by EPG Steering Committee members, will undergo a double-blind review. EPG conferences are highly selective and accept only a small fraction of proposals.

Paper proposals should include an anonymous PDF file with a paper title and a detailed abstract. EPG abstracts are typically more detailed than abstracts requested for most other conferences. They usually have more than 700 words, but are limited to a maximum of 1,000 words (references included). The abstract should outline the research question, theory, data, and methods, along with the contributions to the field of environmental politics and governance. The abstract may include one table or figure, as appropriate. Reviewers are reassured when they see some indications or preliminary evidence that a complete paper will be ready for the conference.

A person cannot submit more than one proposal as the designated presenting author.

We will only consider works-in-progress. Do not submit papers that are currently under review, accepted, or forthcoming. Presenting authors are expected to share their paper with other conference participants three weeks before the conference.
